The Angel Island Association is often able to solicit
grants which allow us to provide 'Travel Scholarships' for low income
schools and other groups who would like to visit Angel Island for an
educational tour but cannot
afford the cost of travel.
Availability of scholarships depends entirely on the
availability of funds to support them, and we may not be able to honor
every request. Based on the size of our supporting grants, we are rarely
able to contribute more than $1,500 to a single group. We are open,
however, to providing partial scholarships to groups who can find
additional
sources of funding.
Currently, all our available funds have been committed. We
will continue to pursue additional grants and thank you for your patience.
Tours:
Groups requesting a docent-led tour should contact the
state park volunteer coordinator to make arrangements for tours. They can
be found at 415-435-3522 or
aivc@parks.ca.gov. Your scholarship award may cover the cost of the
tour, but the Angel Island Association is unable to make arrangements for
the date and content of your docent-led tour.
Travel to Angel Island:
We can assist with the cost of ferry service as well as
transportation to the ferry, if needed. Groups should first contact the
park volunteer coordinator above to request a school group rate for the
ferry.
Then check with the Angel Island Ferry at 415-435-2131
or www.angelislandferry.com
if leaving from Tiburon or the Group Sales Department of the Blue and Gold
Fleet at 415-705-8204 or
groups@blueandgoldfleet.com if leaving from San Francisco. The Blue
and Gold Fleet has generously agreed to allow all of our scholarship
groups to use their group rate, regardless of size.
Selection of transportation to the ferry is your choice.
We will need contact information, preferably including an email address,
to communicate our commitment to pay the transportation company.
Application Process
If you would like to apply for a travel scholarship,
gather the information above and then complete the
online application. This is the best way for us to receive your
request. We also have a file you can
download and either fax
to 415-435-2950 or mail to us at P.O. Box 866, Tiburon, CA 94920. In
most cases, we will need a minimum of 10 business days lead time to
approve and finalize arrangements of your scholarship. Many docent-led
tours are fully booked months ahead (especially for the popular
Immigration Station), so advance planning is recommended.
You are responsible for making the tour, ferry, and
other required transportation arrangements. If you are accepted for a
scholarship. Our acceptance letter to you will be copied to those
organizations whose fees we are covering so that you should not have
out-of-pocket expenses. Your application for the state park School Group Rate for
the ferry is a critical element, as it reduces the cost of your
transportation and helps our funds support more students.
When filling out the form, please be sure to type your
email address and phone number properly so that we can respond to your
request promptly. If you haven't had any response to an emailed form in 2
days or a faxed form in 1 week, please contact us at 415-435-3972 or
scholarship@angelisland.org to ensure that we received it.
